In a candid self-assessment, Chris Hemsworth opened up during his interview with Vanity Fair about the aftermath of the widely-criticized Thor: Love & Thunder.
As revealed in the extensive Vanity Fair interview, Hemsworth felt that in Thor 4, he turned Thor into a parody of himself, getting caught up in all the silliness and improvisation of the film, something he confesses he still can’t forgive himself for. “I got carried away with all the improvisation and silliness and turned myself into a parody. My performance tanked,” said the 40-year-old Marvel star, who has been on an extended break from acting as he was diagnosed in 2023 with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s.
Despite the setback of Thor: Love & Thunder, Hemsworth remains determined and mentioned in the interview that he believes he owes the fans a proper Thor 5, as things went awry with “Love & Thunder.”
However, whenever Thor returns – as Marvel has promised – director Taika Waititi will not be returning behind the camera. The director of the previous two Thor films had stated in a previous interview: “It’s a very exhausting process to work on these films endlessly for two and a half years. I don’t know how accurate that is. I do know that I won’t be participating… I will focus on the other films I have signed up for. I imagine the next Thor would come sooner but I love Marvel and working with them. I love Chris.”
Hemsworth added that he enjoys portraying this role but if the next film comes, he wants to experiment with the style and genre it will have.
“I don’t want to keep doing it until the world is so tired that it rolls its eyes when it sees me on screen as Thor. If the audience wants to see me again as Thor and if there’s something we believe will be exciting and fun, then great. I don’t have an answer for you yet, but I would love to try and figure out how we can do it again and make it a bit unpredictable,” he had previously stated to EW.
For now, we will see him in the role of Demetrius in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in theaters on May 22.
